Learning that Works for Mississippi

Mississippi is integrating its career and technical curricula with academia to improve the relevance and value of education for students. The Mississippi Department of Education's program is called Pathways to Success. The Mississippi Community College Board program is titled Advanced Training for a Powerful Workforce. Both programs prepare students for success in both college and career by employing the national career clusters system and have helped Carla Griffin improve her quality of life through education. Carla's is a story of how real education is making a real impact and gives testimony of how these two programs working in concert is Learning that Works for Mississippi.

Effective Teachers and Performance Pay

On July 27, 2012, Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant announced a new teacher-appraisal plan – performance-based compensation. If adopted by the legislature, salary increases and bonuses would be based on teacher effectiveness rather than tenure and credentials. Depending on the actions of the legislature and the implementation of the districts, Mississippi may very well have a new educational landscape in the coming years.

Gulfport Students Build Working Robots and Promising Futures

A member of the international FIRST Robotics Competition, Team Fusion comprises high school students from Gulfport and other districts on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. These students partner with area engineers to design and build working robots. Through this process, students learn real-world applications and asymmetrical problem-solving skills, particularly those relevant to STEM fields. Click here to listen.
