School districts across Mississippi are thinking outside the box on their approach to many aspects of the classroom through the Districts of Innovation initiative. In this episode, we speak with the three newest districts in the initiative to hear what they are doing and how they are progressing. Baldwyn and Booneville school districts have teamed up to offer online classes and built an expanded career and technical education center to serve both districts’ students and pool their resources. Grenada School District has added support for new programs in kindergarten through high school and is expanding their pre-K efforts.
Additionally, we talk with Myra Pannell, leader of Districts of Innovation projects at the RCU, to learn about options for districts seeking this designation and the history of this legislation.
Finally, Alexis Nordin shares findings from a recent study on outcomes of students earning industry-recognized national certifications at the secondary and postsecondary levels, including the value certifications add for gaining skills, employment, and higher wages.
