November 1, 2017

Each year hundreds of Mississippi students earn nationally recognized certifications to show their mastery of workplace skills. In this episode, we talk RCU staff who lead the certification process, a certification organization representative, and a teacher whose class offers certifications to all students.

Students with national certifications on their resume often have a head start on their peers when entering the working. Hear Alexis Nordin share the importance of certifications and how Mississippi and the nation approaches certifications at the high school level, then we take a closer look at one career and technical education pathway’s approach to certifications by talking with a representative of the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence, Madison County’s automotive service instructor, and Brad Skelton, the curriculum lead for automotive programs.

In addition, this month’s Research Minute focuses on an online technical math class for high school students. One of the first of its kind, this class applies real world topics and problems to students’ equations to encourage critical thinking.
